Vaccinate Your Children Against Measles, RSG Urges Parents
The Rivers State Government has urged parents in the State to take advantage of the forthcoming campaign against measles to vaccinate their children against disease.
The campaign is scheduled to take place from October 20 to November 2, 2022.
The Permanent Secretary, Primary HealthCare Management Board (PHCMB), Dr Agiriye Harry, made the appeal in a document made available to The Tide. He said the first dose of measles vaccine would be given at nine months of age, while a second dose is at 15 months of age to confer 95 per cent immunity.
According to him, the Rivers State Government, in collaboration with its partners, have mapped out strategies to conduct an integrated measles vaccination campaign that will commence in two streams across the 23 LGAs of the State.
“The Rivers State Government and partners will administer conjugate vaccine to children from nine months to 59 months in all government health facilities, schools, special centres, places of worship, as well as field vaccinating homes.
“Other routine childrenhood immunizations will be given to children from 0-23 months, and COVID-19 vaccination for adult and all eligible persons will also be vaccinated by our healthcare providers during the exercise,” he said.
While explaining the effectiveness of the measles vaccines, the document further stated that “the vaccines are free, effective and safe”, adding that it is safer for a child to get vaccinated than for a child to come down with the disease.
“Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect infants and young children. It is spread very quickly through infected droplets”, the document stated.
It further stated that “in Nigeria, National Primary HealthCare Development Agency (NPHCDA) has routinely had a two-year measles campaign to give booster doses to cover for the remaining 5 per cent, as well as reach children missed by routine immunisation”.
The document noted that the last measles campaign in Nigeria was held in 2018, while the planned campaign in 2020 could not hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We already have immunity gaps among children in some communities in Nigeria,” it said.
Dr Harry, however, urged all parents and guardians to bring out their children/wards during the forthcoming vaccination in order to protect their children from contracting the disease.
