Nigeria, Mauritius Retain Seats In UN Rights Committees

Nigeria and Mauritius have retained their seats for another four years in the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR).
The body of 18 independent experts monitors the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights by its State Parties.
In 2021, Egypt and Morocco were elected to occupy two seats of the four for the African Group.
Egypt currently chairs the committee.
The remaining two were contested on Wednesday at UN headquarters by Nigeria, Cameroon, Malawi and Mauritius.
Nigeria’s candidate, Amb Peters Emuze won at the first ballot scoring 39 out of the 54 ballots of member states.
After Malawi lost, Cameroon and Mauritius competed for the remaining seat because they had the same number of votes.
The latter eventually won.
Emuze hailed the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande for the role played in his re-election.
The retired career diplomat rose to a Special Grade Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served as Head of the UN department in the ministry.
Emuze served in Nigeria’s missions in Zambia, the Netherlands, Italy, Hong Kong and the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN in Geneva and Switzerland.
He was President of UN Conference on Disarmament and member of the committee drafting the General Comment on Sustainable Development and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

According to the Head of Service, Governor Fubara has continued to demonstrate uncommon commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Rivers State, stressing that such gestures underscore his people-oriented leadership style. A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.
