Okiro Tasks FG On Special Housing Scheme For Police
Former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, has called on the Federal Government to equip the Nigerian Police Force with modern equipment to fight crime.
He said fighting modern crime, will require the use of modern equipment and technology, if success must be achieved.
The former IGP also urged the Federal government to come up with a special programme of housing that will take care of the police housing needs.
Okiro, who disclosed this while speaking to newsmen at the Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa, shortly on arrival from Abuja on Friday, noted that accommodation has become a major challenge to serving police officers.
“ I initiated the police housing scheme when I was the Inspector General, but the situation now is so worrisome with higher demand for accommodation.
“ Now, the demand for housing is so high with the increase of policemen in the country, and it is difficult to cope with their demand for accommodation.
“ I think that one of the things the Federal Government can do is to come up with a special programme to house the police officers.
“ This will help the policemen to have a place where they can put their heads after a hard day job”, he said.
Buttressing further on equipping the police with modern equipment, the former IGP said that modern crime requires modern equipment, adding that the Nigerian Police need modern equipment to fight modern crime.
“ It is just like when you employ a good driver and pay him well, and you ask him to go to the airport and pick up somebody with a vehicle that has flat tyres and could not start at the same time. How do you think that good driver can accomplish that task”, Okiro explained..
On the issue of state police, the former IGP said the law had to be amended to accommodate state police, pointing that the law as it stands now recognizes only the Nigerian Police Force, but that the National Assembly could amend the law to recognize the state police.
