Rangers Fans Celebrate Over Potential AFCON Cancellation
Some Glasgow Rangers fans are already buzzing over the potential cancellation of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to hold from January 9 to February 6 in Cameroon.
Tidesports source gathered that Rangers and their fans have been sweating over the possibility of losing Nigerian trio Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey – with the three players expected to miss the Gers derby clash with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership – while away in Cameroon for the AFCON next month.
The club contacted former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, pleading to allow the trio to resume the Eagles camp after their derby clash on January 2, but following the sacking of the Franco-German this week, the Scottish giants have been in disarray.
“We need a good preparation, we need the players at least ten days before, but as you know in the UK, they play,” Rohr said prior to his sack.
“Somebody called me from Glasgow already. They have the derby Celtic v Rangers on the second day of January and asked if we can let the players play.”
After reports emerged on Wednesday that the competition could be cancelled owing to the COVID-19 Omicron variant, Gers fans took to Twitter to express their delight at the prospect of having all the Eagles players available for their trip to Celtic Park as they aim to extend their lead at the top of the Premiership.
West Mids Loyal, a delighted fan of the club wrote, “Would be fantastic news for us having these players available.”
