Selong Calls For Repositioning Of Squash Federation
A former Vice-President of the Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF), Edem Selong, has attributed the underdevelopment of the sport in the country to poor administrative decisions.
Selong told newsmen in Lagos that there were a lot of talented athletes in squash, but there was no focus on the part of its administrators.
According to him, this is the reason why there are low activities in the squash federation.
Selong, who is currently a board member of the federation, said that there was need for urgent overhauling of the sports.
“Although, I’m a member of the current board, things have never been this bad; and it’s so sad that we found ourselves here.
“These players have been left hanging for so long, I can’t remember the last time a competition was organised for these players at the federation level.
“It’s disheartening because there are lots of talents in this country. I hear that players now organise competitions among themselves.
“They are not just playing the game, they have passion for it; the moment we get things right administratively, every other thing will fall into place.’’
On the forthcoming federation elections, he said that any candidate with passion and focus should be considered to rebuild squash as a sport in the country.
“We don’t even know when the election will hold, but we want passionate leaders who are focused to lead the federation to glory.
“When I was vice-president under Femi Ajagbe, we were going to tournaments within and outside the African continent for competitions in the face of harsh financial conditions.
“That was because, we prioritised our needs; we knew what was important and we focused on that.
“We need focused people and selfless people to come out and compete.’’
Tidesports gathered that the last national competition was held in 2014, when the Adamu Erena-led administration organised “a winner takes all competition in Minna, Niger’’.
