Minister Warns Board Members Against Interference
The Minister of State for
Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Samuel Ortom, on Thursday in Abuja urged members of the ministry’s board to avoid interference in the day-to-day- operations of agencies under it.
The minister made the call when he inaugurated the newly constituted boards of five parastatals of the ministry.
They are the Consumer Protection Council, the National Automotive Council, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency, the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission and the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority.
Ortom said that the board members should remember that their appointments were only on part time basis.
He said no chairman or board member would be entitled to an official vehicle on a permanent basis, adding that the same applied to office or residential accommodation.
“May I seize this opportunity to remind you that boards of parastatals are responsible for setting out broad economic, financial, operational administrative guidelines and targets for their various agencies.
“They are concerned with policy issues, monitoring of institutional projects and ensuring that the parastatals’ mandates are realised.
“You are therefore enjoined to adhere strictly to the provisions of the enabling acts of your agencies as well as financial regulations and guidelines on administrative procedures.
“May I emphasise that your appointment is on part-time basis only. And as such, you are not expected to interfere or participate in the day-to-day running of your respective agencies.
“I must stress at this juncture that no chairman or board member is entitled to an official vehicle on permanent basis.
“ In addition, you are enjoined to comply with the provisions of extant circulars governing your tenure/appointment,” he said
Ortom admonished them to discharge their duties with utmost sense of responsibility.
He expressed the optimism that their appointment would further enhance the overall mandate of the ministry to attract investors and boost the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.
The permanent secretary in the ministry, Mr Dauda Kigbu, said the appointment of the board members came at the right time as the ministry “is currently being repositioned’’.
Kigbu urged them to participate actively in the actualisation of the ministry’s mandate.
