Body Tasks Girls On ICT Career
The Chairperson, Women In Technology In Nigeria (WITIN), Mrs Martha Alade, yesterday advised girls to consider taking up careers in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) field.
Alade gave the advice at the “Girls In ICT Day” programme in Lagos organised by WITIN.
The Tide source reports that the theme of the event was ‘’Women and Girls in Technology- Expanding Horizons’’.
She said that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and other stakeholders believed that ICT had affected the life and work of everyone on the planet today.
Alade said that this necessitated the need for girls to be involved in it.
According to her, with the future constantly being re-invented through technology, ICT is the coolest area to get into by girls.
“We are here to raise the visibility of numerous women in ICT in Nigeria and to celebrate the feat of our young girls who have made tremendous impact in the field.
“We are here to encourage more girls to step up to technology and not leave all the fun to boys in shaping our future,” she said.
Alade said that ‘International Girls in ICT Day’ was an initiative backed by the ITU Member States in 2010, and celebrated on the 4th Thursday in April every year.
She said that the initiative intended to create a global environment that would empower and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the field of ICTs.
Earlier, Ms Ann Chang, Senior Advisor for Women and Technology at the US Department of State, said that only about 25 per cent Nigerians were connected to the internet.
Chang said that with such low percentage, there were still huge opportunities to connect more Nigerians, hence the need for girls to be involved in ICT.
She said that when more people were connected on the internet, it would boost the economy of such nation.
According to her, girls should develop contents and applications on the internet to make them more relevant in the ICT field.
Mrs Njideka Jack, Senior Manager, Data Communications Services Planning, MTN, Nigeria, said that gender stereotype was one of the barriers to girls taking up courses and careers in ICT.
Jack said that some girls had the mindset that careers in ICT were meant for boys and that such careers were tedious.
She called on older girls in ICT careers to motivate and train the younger girls to see reasons to go into such careers.
