CNPP Charts Path To National Confab

The National Publicity Secretary, Conference of Nigeria
Political Parties (CNPP) Mr Osita Okechukwu, says that for there to be a
Sovereign National Conference, corruption must be fought to the barest minimum.

He made the remark in Abuja while reacting to the calls from
some quarters for a Sovereign National Conference.

Okechukwu noted that if corruption was tackled, then
whatever resources that were available would be harnessed for the welfare of
Nigerians.

He advised that “all hands should be on deck” to fight
corruption “so that the billions of dollars frozen from the Nigerian Treasury
would be used to invest in critical infrastructure like railway and
electricity”.

Okechukwu called on government to be committed to the
welfare of its citizens and fight the material conditions that were leading to
the agitation for a Sovereign National Conference.

“The material condition is as a result of the corrupt and
inefficient nature of the centre, those clamouring for the conference are not
democratic”, Okechukwu added.

“If they are democratic, they should realise that a
democratic process to return delegates to the conference should be elective.’’

He said the energy that is poured on how to convene the
conference should be translated onto stemming corruption and inefficiencies in
the country.

The CNPP National Publicity Secretary equally said that there
was no need for a new constitution as clamoured by some Nigerians.

He added that amending the 1999 Constitution could still
lead us to where we are going to, a modern Nigeria.

“The constitution is good and could be made better, it is a
useful document. However, the problem the constitution had was the way past
administrations handled it.

Okechukwu then pointed out that chapter 2 of the
constitution which states the fundamental objectives and the direct principles
of state policy is the sole of every constitution and should be adhered to by
government.
