Women’s W/Cup: E/Guinea, Australia In Must Win Encounter
Equatorial Guinea play Australia today with both sides needing a win to have any chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup in Germany.
Both teams lost their opening Group D games 1-0, Equatorial Guinea edged out by Norway while Brazil overcame Australia.
Both sides played well against their higher-ranked opponents and need a result to have a chance of grabbing one of the two places in the last eight from the group.
Equatorial Guinea know they played well against Norway, in their first ever World Cup game, but must play with more confidence today.
“I’m happy that we played so well (against Norway), we have more of a chance to use some confidence for the next game,” said Equatorial Guinea coach, Marcello Frigerio.
“I think we will have our chances in the attack against Australia. This time we need to use them.”
Australia’s coach Tom Sermanni said he was happy not to face the little-known Africans until their second group game.
Sermanni said his team battled admirably in their first-round match against Brazil and that has helped boost their confidence too.
“We now need to focus on our next game and look to win our games against Equatorial Guinea and Norway and then hopefully proceed from there,” said Sermanni.
Group favourites, Brazil also plays Norway in Wolfsburg today.
