Niger Reaches CHAN Quarter Finals
Niger made history at the African Nations Championship in Sudan on Sunday while beating Ghana 1-0 to reach the quarter finals in their first appearance in a major continental.
The Menas beat the 2009 finalists Ghana 1-0 to finish second in Group B of the tournament for home-based players.
Niger, who had never previously contested a Confederation of African Football tournament, secured the stunning victory thanks to a late strike by Gambo Tukur.
South Africa finished top of the group thanks to a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in Sunday’s other game.
The Warriors were second in the group before action started but despite taking an early lead, goals from Leonard Shabangu and Already Mkwanazi saw the South Africans home.
Niger finished second in the group on six points, three behind the leaders who won all their group matches.
The West Africans have now set up a last eight clash with hosts Sudan on Friday.
In the other quarter final that day, South Africa will take on Algeria.
