2011: Govs To Undergo Induction Courses
The Secretariat of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) would starting from 2011 undertake induction courses for elected governors and their aids as well as other elected political office holders in the country.
Mr Asishana Okauru, the NGF Director General, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Abuja .
He noted that was the practice in the U.S. where newly elected governors were not allowed to assume office until they went through such a course.
“Such induction course had become necessary for Nigeria governors and their secretariat staff especially on the premise that most of them are coming from a different background and needed to be thought the rudiments of governance,’’ Okauru said.
He said that the idea of the induction course was to expose such newly elected state officials to the rudiments of governance as well as re-orientate them since they were coming from a different backgrounds.
“The essence is to induct them on issues relating to security, time management, financial prudence and how to relate with security agents, the Police and other arms of government. ’’ Okauru said.
The Nigeria Governors Forum which is an umbrella association of the 36 state elected governors had recently been exploring opportunities to share experiences with National Governors’ Association of America.
Okauru, who recently led a team from the secretariat to the U.S. to attend a conference of the National Governors’ Association of America, said that they were catching up on such opportunities in order to tap from the America ’s democratic experiences.
According to him, such experiences when introduced into the country’s polity are bound to enthrone good governance and deepen democracy in the country.
Meanwhile, Okauru has called on governors to make public, names of defaulting contractors in their areas.
He said that such call had become necessary following frequent cases of contractors abandoning state projects after being paid mobilisation fee.
“The names of such defaulting contractors should be placed on the internet for people to see as this will prevent other state governments from falling victim of their antics,’’ Okauru
He added that where possible, a legal action should be instituted against such contractors with a view of retrieving state monies from them as well as prosecute them.
