Delta Govt To Provide Science Equipment In Schools
The Delta Government has reassured schools in the state of its commitment to providing modem science equipment to enhance the teaching and learning of science and vocational objects. Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Mrs Juliet Agoba, gave the assurance on Friday in Asaba, while presenting awards to students, who excelled in the 20 I 0 NNPCIOPEC Science Quiz Competition.
Agoba said that the study of science was the key to science and technological development, as well as a propelling force in the economy.
She said the provision of the equipment would be done as soon as funds were available and appealed to science and vocational teachers to be devoted in their duties.
Mr Emmanuel Gegere, Director of Science, Vocational and Technical Education in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education. thanked the commissioner for her efforts in promoting science education in schools across the state.
He said that promoting science was in line with the state government’s policy on human capital development, which was geared towards the vision 20:20-20 for national development.
He also appealed to the state government to make adequate provision in the budgetary allocation to the ministry to enable it effectively support the teaching and learning of science, vocational and technical education.
Three students, all from private schools, represented the state in the competition and excelled. Meanwhile, the commissioner said that henceforth, Home Economics specialists would be given the opportunity to set and assess Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination questions in the state.
She said this when the Delta chapter of the Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria (H ETA ) paid her a courtesy visit in Asaba on Friday.
Agoba said it was wrong for teachers in other fields to set and assess questions in the subject. especially when there were experienced Home Economics specialists.
She assured the association that government would ensure that basic materials for the teaching and learning of the subject were provided in schools.
