Edo Abolishes Infrastructure Levy
The Edo Government has abolished the payment of infrastructure levy by pupils in private schools.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ngozi Osarenren, told newsmen after the State Executive Council meeting in Benin that the decision was taken after an extensive review of the decision taken in 2003 on the matter. “Government has decided that it is not proper to ask private schools to pay the infrastructure levy of N1,500 per student annually”, Osarenren explained. She said the decision was necessary because after paying high school fees, government should not demand the levy from private school pupils. Osarenren, however, promised that the Ministry of Education would ensure the provision of adequate infrastructure in public schools. She urged private school owners not to pay the levy to anyone under any guise because the decision to abolish the levy had nullified the 2003 decsiion.
It would be recalled that the 2003 decision required students in public and private schools to pay the levy.
