CHAN 2010: NFF Drafts Peters To Help Amokachi
Daniel Amokachi is to get assistance from James Peters as Nigeria desperately seek to stave off the embarrassment of failing to qualify for a second successive African Nations Championship.
Nigeria trail Niger Republic by two goals from the first leg, and panicky federation officials have drafted Peters, deputy head of the NFF’s Technical Department and former national team coach, to assist Amokachi.
“He is only going there to support him, not to take over,” NFF Executive Committee member Taiwo Ogunjobi told newsmen in Abuja. “We have to qualify for the competition and we believe that Peters’ experience will help Amokachi and his colleagues.”
Ogunjobi was quick to point out that the decision did not imply a lack of confidence in Amokachi’s abilities.
“We cannot judge Amokachi and his colleague of the basis on one game. We just want to ensure that we do everything possible to qualify.”
The second leg comes up next Saturday in Kano.
