Police Dismiss 10 Officers …Prosecute Seven Over Violent Crimes
The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed about 10 policemen for violent conduct to members of the public, while about seven are being prosecuted in the courts.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Suleman Abba disclosed this Monday, during a press conference at the State Police Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
The Commissioner also said over 55 suspected violent criminals involved in kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and other vices had so far been apprehended by the Rivers State Police Command between December 2009 to date.
Mr Abba reiterated the command’s determination to combat crime in the state, stressing that the command has been reinvigorated and restrategised has renewed its collaborative efforts to fish-out culprits involved in violent crimes.
He stated that the renewed fight against violent crimes has minimised robbery incident, saying the command’s “ no mercy” attitude to violent criminals would be sustained in the interest of the citizenry.
According to the commissioner, all officers and men of the state police command have been directed to statutorily be at alert and decisive while dealing with violent criminals who he noted, operate with sophisticated weapons on innocent members of the public.
He passionately appealed to members of the public to promptly report cases of threat to their lives and prosperities, assuring that such information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
Mr Abba said the greatest security challenges in Rivers State concerns attitude change by the police officers, while performing their duties and their general relationship with members of the public.
He noted that any police officer caught in corrupt practice would be shown the way out so that the image and reputation of the police will be maintained.
He added that policemen suspected to be involved in exceptional cases of murder and unfortunate incident of robbery were also fished out, dismissed and charge to courts as determent to others.
