Niger To Engage Ex-Service Men To Curb Insecurity
Niger State Government says it has commenced discussion with the state Chapter of the Nigerian Legion to facilitate collaboration between the state vigilante group and the legion to curb insecurity.
Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State disclosed this during the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Launch at the Government House in Minna on Monday.
The day was a yearly event to pay tribute to heroes who paid the ultimate price of death and various degrees of injuries during the first and second world wars and fighting insurgency.
The governor added that he was in discussion with the state chairman of the legion to support government efforts toward curbing the menace of insecurity in the state.
“Members of the legion are ex-service men with experience that is why we want them to join hands with our vigilante group to fight insurgency.
“The chairman has also confirmed to me that some of the members of the legion are ready to participate with their experience to provide advice and add value to the fight,” the governor said.
Bello, however, announced a donation of N5 million as part of support to the legion and families of the fallen heroes.
In his remarks, Chairman of the state Legion, Alhaji Abubakar Kutigi, commended the continuous support of the state government towards the welfare of the legion.
Kutigi appealed to those who pledged during the 2020 emblem day to redeem their pledges to enable the council carry out its constitutional duties.
