Expert Wants FG To Enforce Use Of Face Masks
It has been observed that people especially our rural dwellers no longer make use of their nose and face masks as preventive measure towards the COVID-19 pandemic across the country, hence, the need for total enforcement of the use of face masks in order to curtail the spread of the disease.
In a media roundtable with journalists in Calabar, organised by Cochrane Nigeria at the weekend, one of the facilitators, Dr. Ekpereonne Esu of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), posited that “until an effective vaccine or treatment becomes available, COVID-19 prevention will rely on physical measures such as use of facemasks, social distancing and hand hygiene.”
According to him, these measures were aimed at reducing contact with contaminated surfaces, prevent sick people from coming in close contact with healthy people so as to reduce opportunities for disease transmission.
He stressed that since every member of the public is at risk of COVID-19, there is a need for all hand to be on deck, hence, urgent government intervention with regard to these preventive measures.
Dr. Esu further explained that “a systemic view showed that the transmission of viruses was lower with physical distancing of one meter or more compared to a distance of less than one meter.
In her presentation, and apparently corroborating Dr. Esu’s position, Mrs. Dachi Arikpo, a director in Cochrane Nigeria contended for confirmed symptomatic cases, the period of contact is measured as the two days before, through the 14 days after the date on which the sample was taken that might lead to confirmation.
Mrs. M. Chibuso had earlier given an overview of the case definitions for the coronavirus disease.
