COVID-19: NURTW Hails Wike’s Proactive Measures
The Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Abali Park Branch, Mr. Stephen Orlu, has said that his union has taken necessary measures against the spread of Covid-19 among its members.
Orlu disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, on Tuesday.
He said as part of measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the state, drivers who operate within the park, have been directed to reduce the number of passengers per seat in their vehicles to ensure adequate spacing.
According to him, “our members are complying, buses used to carry four per seat, they are now carrying three per seat and they are not complaining’’.
On the issue of market closure,Orlu, commended the state Governor, Chief NyesomWike for the proactive steps he took to contain the spread of the deadly virus, but appealed that the period given for the markets to open be extended beyond the Easter celebrations with adequate provisions by the government.
According to him, an extended period would reduce the crowd in the market and not defeat the aim of the initial directives to shut down the markets.
Meanwhile, sea pirates have hijacked a passenger boat conveying 12 passengers from AbonnemaWharf Jetty to Bakana in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The chairman of Bakana Boat Drivers Association, Mr Jeff Promise, who confirmed this to newsmen, said the pirates carted away goods belonging to the passengers.
Promise, while expressing sadness over the attack, enjoined sthe government to adequately equip security personnel to enable them carry out routine patrols on the waterways for the safety of lives and properties of commuters.
He said, “The boat loaded from Port Harcourt to Bakana, on getting close to Bakana, the pirates blocked him (the boat driver) and collected the boat and poured the passengers in the creek in full view of security personnel who couldn’t do much because they are not well equipped’’.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
