Rotary Renovates Classroom, Donates Desks, Books To School
As part efforts to boost teaching and learning, the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, South (District 9141) has handed over a renovated and furnished classroom to Community Secondary School, Nkpolu, Oroworokwu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
Speaking at a brief but colourful commissioning yesterday, Rotary President, District 9141, Rita Marley said the project was borne out of the organisation’s need to better society, adding that it was done in partnership with the ‘Ibiyekari Foundation (IF), which she founded.
Marley further said the handover was in fulfilment of an earlier promise to the school authorities when she visited the place last year and saw the students learning in poor conditions, including sitting on the floor to learn.
She said, “ in rotary, we have six areas of focus. One of these six areas of focus is basic education and training. Every month we have a particular thing we do in Rotary. In this month (September) it is basically education and literacy. So we carry out career talks. We go to schools and carry out what we call NEEDS assessment. We look at what the school needs, not what we want and then we carry out such project in our little way”.
Marley said aside one of the school classrooms renovated from ceiling to floor and furnished, 20 sets of desks, new blackboard, teaching and learning aids, such as chalks and the 150 exercise books were donated to the school.
“Recall that I came to this school last year and did a NEEDS assessment. We were told that they needed to fix the classroom and furnish it with desks. We realised that there were no seats here, students were sitting on the floor. And we decided to do what we are doing,” she said, adding that it was the heartbeat of the Rotary District Governor, Rotarian Nze Anizor.
Marley expressed happiness that her district (South) was able to complete and deliver the project and urged the school to make good use of them.
