Ikpeazu Explains Spending On Security
Abia State Governor, Chief Okezie Ikpeazu has given explanations as to why his administration considered allocating more funds to security of lives and property in the state, saying that no viable economy strives under insecurity of its economic activities.
Governor Ikpeazu made this public while fielding questions from reporters last Friday at the Assembly Complex, Umuahia after he presented to the State House of Assembly the 2019 Appropriation Bill of N139, 542,000,000
Taking a comparative analysis as regards his security budget and its benefits to the State, he said, ” I am concerned by the fact that we are running a democracy and I need not to do the disclosure otherwise security is an issue you don’t make public.
“I don’t need to tell those that I am fighting how much I am spending in fighting them or the strategy I am adopting in fighting them, otherwise they will run you down. If we are to be one of the safest states in Nigeria, we have a new strategies in Abia, deploying people we call gate keepers in all the communities that is all I have to say
“But given the present economic realities on ground, to balance the need to create jobs, and because you need to fight crime in order to create jobs so that the rate of crime would go down, otherwise you spend more in buying military hard ware and getting information in chasing these criminals, that is why we have struck a balance and that is what we have done.”
The governor who was ushered into the Hallowed Chambers of the State Assembly at about 1:50pm said the 2019 Budget christened “Budget of Consolidation” was formulated to reduce unemployment among the teeming unemployed youths in the State and ensure that it completed all ongoing projects.
“Mr. Speaker, after due consideration of relevant macroeconomic indices and prevailing variables, the estimated budget for 2019 fiscal year is One Hundred and Thirty Nine Billion, and Five Hundred and Forty Two Million Naira Only (N139, 542,000,000)”
He said the 2019 budget is 7.14% lower than the 2018 budget which he maintained was as a result of the current economic realities in the Country.
The governor disclosed that N56b is for Recurrent Expenditure while N67b is for Capital Expenditure.
Before the Governor was urshered into the Plenary session of the House, the State House of Assembly passed into law a Supplementary Appropriation of N9,819,550,390.
