…Trains Ebonyi Farmers On Nutrition Benefits
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)-Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) last Monday trained 25 farmers in Ebonyi State on importance of adequate nutrition in households.
The IFAD-VCDP State Programme Coordinator (SPC), Mr Sunday Ituma, at the training said that the programme realised the importance of adequate nutrition to the health and productivity of farmers.
“IFAD-VCDP realises the gap in mainstreaming nutrition in its programme implementation and that is why its national office organised this training.
“The training is for selected participants in five benefiting local government areas of the state as it is one of the interventions advocated during the last midterm review of the programme.
“The trainees are expected to propagate this message at the grassroots to ensure that nutritional gaps are adequately filled in their respective areas,” he said.
The programme coordinator urged the participants to take the training seriously to acquire requisite knowledge.
“I never knew before now that obesity is a form of malnutrition as most people believe that being overweight is as a result of feeding,” he said.
The Rural Institutional Gender Youth Mainstreaming Officer (RIGYMO) of IFAD-VCDP in Ebonyi, Mrs Fransisca Anya, said that the trainees were expected to train 30 farmers in each of the five benefiting local government areas of the state.
Anya listed the benefitting LGAs as Afikpo South, Ikwo, Izzi, Ishielu and Ohaozara.
“The local government areas should ensure that the trainees are capable of executing the task so that at the end of next IFAD-VCDP mission assessment, we will be rated high in the nutrition aspect.
“The importance of adequate nutrition in households cannot be over-emphasised because farmers who feed adequately are healthy and ensure high production of crops and other agricultural products,” Anya said.
The lead Consultant at the training, Mrs Nkiruka Nnaemego, offered tutorials on the need for household to ensure that varieties of nutrients are contained in the food they consume.
Nnaemego said that tutorials were also offered on the need for farmers to engage in healthy living, family planning and antenatal opportunities, especially by pregnant women and ascertain their Human Immune Virus (HIV) status.

FG, Ogun Distribute Inputs To 2,400 Farmers
Federal Government and the Ogun State Government, on Wednesday, distributed farm inputs to farmers as part of effort to address food security challenge.
The State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, during the flag-off ceremony of Inputs Redemption Under The National Agricultural Growth Scheme-Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), in Ogun State, disclosed that beneficiaries of the gesture were primarily rice, maize and cassava farmers across the State.
Ayo-Ajayi commended the Ogun State Government for partnering with the government at the centre for the effort in supporting farmers with inputs that would bring about yieldings for local consumption and likely exportation.
She noted that government is supporting rice, cassava and maize farmers with inputs worth N212,000; N189,000 and N186,000 respectively.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, who represented the Commissioner in the Ministry, Bolu Owotomo, stated that traditional farmers are critical in food production, hence the need to encourage and support them with inputs that would bring about desired results during harvesting.
Owotomo said: “Let us make good use of this opportunity, so that the success of this phase will make farmers benefit more from the state and federal governments of Nigeria.”
Earlier, State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ayo-Ajayi, appreciated the present administration for partnering with the federal government for the initiative, adding that the programme is designed to support farmers at the grassroots level in cassava, rice and maize with inputs such as, seeds, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, to boost their production and enhance their livelihood.
