Delta APC Crisis Worsens As Leaders Disagree On Primary Option
The crisis rocking the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has worsened following the failure of the two factions to agree on either direct or indirect method for the forthcoming state party primaries.
While the Chief Cyril Ogodo-led faction in its state working committee meeting adopted direct primary to choose candidates in line with the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee’s decision, the other faction led by Prophet Jones Erue chose indirect method.
The state chapter of the APC has been embroiled in crisis after factions held parallel congresses in the state.
A former National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, inaugurated Ogodo as the state party chairman.
Ogodo has the support of Olorogun O’Tega Emerhor and Chief Hyacinth Enuha, including the majority of the state governorship aspirants.
However, Oshiomhole, upon assumption of office, inaugurated Erue as chairman backed by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Chief Great Ogboru.
Since then, all efforts to reconcile the two factions had been futile.
It was gathered that a frontline governorship aspirant, Prof Pat Utomi, staged a walkout from the Erue-led faction meeting for endorsing the indirect primary contrary to the decision of the party leadership.
It was learnt that Utomi and Ogboru’s supporters clashed at the meeting venue because some party leaders allegedly wanted to stop the former’s speech.
Utomi said: “Those who claim to be very popular should come and test their popularity with the party members through direct primaries and not through handpicked delegate elections.”
