UNIPORT Killing: Ex-Students Union Leaders Call For Probe
A group under the aegis
of Concerned former students Union leaders in Tertiary Institutions from Rivers State, has urged the President of the Federal republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the management of the University of Port Harcourt over the recent killing of a student of the institution in Port Harcourt by the Police during a peaceful protest.
In a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency meeting held in Port Harcourt, the body equally called on the Inspector-General of Police to fish out the trigger bound Police Officer and prosecute him.
The group condemned the extreme use o f force by security operatives against unarmed students during protest which resulted in the death of Comrade Peter Offurum, the President of the Faculty of Management Science Students Association (FAMSA).
The body which decried the militarisation of Nigerian University campuses, stated that Nigerian Students were entitled to peaceful protest on any issue affecting them, and flayed the management of the University of Port Harcourt over its decision to proscribe the Students Union Government of the institution.
The former student Union leaders, which condemned the unprofessional and poor management of information on the recent events at the University of Port Harcourt, also called on the Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike to set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the protest and subsequent killing of the Uniport student.
The body also vowed to take pragmatic and legal actions if their demands were not met in next seven days.
