Two female nurses of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) have been sacked following their indictment by the report of a panel set up by the management of the hospital to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of Miss Kelechi Precious, a Year two student of the University of Port Harcourt at the hospital.
The Chief Medical Director of UPTH, Prof. Aaron Ojule disclosed this yesterday while briefing newsmen on the report of the Special Panel headed by Prof John Ikimalo, at the conference hall of the hospital.
The CMD said the two affected Nurses did not follow established protocol in receiving Patients at the Accident and Emergency Department of the hospital when the unfortunate incident occurred.
He stated that the two affected staff had earlier been issued queries and based on their unsatisfactory responses, they have also both been placed on a three months suspension without pay, while awaiting the approval of the Federal Ministry of Health for the termination of their appointments.
Also affected were two staff of a private security company who were not at their duty post at the Accident and Emergency Department when the incidence occurred.
Prof. Ojule who hinted that the action would serve as a deterrent to other negligent staff, said the management would further investigate and punish those involved in the stealing and destruction of UPTH property.
He said the management of UPTH would liaise with the authorities of the University of Port Harcourt to work out modalities for repair and replacement of the damaged property.
He also advised the students to channel their grievances through the established authorities of the University, rather than take laws into their hands.
It would be recalled that the management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital had set up a special panel to investigate the remote and immediate cause of the death of late Miss Kelechi Precious at the Hospital last August.
