NURTW Warns Members Against Political Thuggery
The National Union of
Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has called on members to be good ambassador of non-violence elections rather than being used as political thugs.
The National President of the Union Alhaji Najeem Yasin, in an interview with our correspondent in Lagos, said members should at all times put up their best behaviour.
Yasin said transporters were professionals like medical doctors. lawyers and pilots whose professions affects the lives of people.
“We are very important stakeholders in the growth of the economy of this nation, so we should see ourselves as ambassadors to promote good governance by promoting peaceful elections.
“Our profession can make us millionaires, we should not be used as thugs and be dumped to pay dearly later for our greed. We are responsible citizens of Nigeria and we should show it.
“Gone were the days when transport operators were seen as second citizens, we have graduates as well as masters degree holders in the profession, and we should be respected as professionals and not miscreants,” he said.
Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, Lagos State Chairman of the Union, told our correspondent that members have been called upon at various meetings at different points to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Agbede said that the card was their right to vote in leaders that would recognise the input of the unit in the progress of the state and the nation.
The chairman supporting the president’s view, stressing that members should face their job rather than being used as political thugs.
“Our profession is a risky one, we should do it diligently rather than cut our lives short in the cause of unnecessary thuggery,” Agbede said.
