Water Transportation Reduces Road Traffic Congestion – Expert
The Chief Executive
Officer of Tarzan Jetty in Lagos, Mr Ganiyu Balogun, has said that the solution to chronic traffic gridlock in Lagos Metropolis was the development of water transportation.
Balogun, who is also the President, National Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters (ATBOWATON), told our correspondent on Tuesday in Lagos that adequate investment in water transportation was also capable of boosting water tourism.
He said that investing in water tourism would not only help in reducing the burden on the roads, it would also boost water tourism thereby creating more job opportunities.
According to him, the deplorable conditions of many roads in the country have made it difficult for tourists to come and navigate the numerous tourist attractions in the nation.
“Government needs to invest more in water transportation, so that boat operators can open up the waterways for boat services.
“This can also help promote tourism and commercial activities within the waterways, “ he said.
Balogun also urged the government to support the private sector to improve the tourism sub-sector.
“Opening the waterways will help improve water transportation in the country, and this can serve as another avenue for economic development.
“So, government should assist private investors to import modern ships, ferries and boats to make water transportation easier and safer for the people”.
Balogun noted that most people were afraid of water transportation because of the old types of canoes and ferries the operators used to transport passengers.
He expressed the confidence that more passengers would be attracted to water transportation when modern ships, ferries and boats were used.
