Vita Ends33-Year Champions League Wait
As Vita has beaten CS Sfaxien 2-1 in their CAF Champions League semifinals to make their first final appearance in 33 years.
The DR Congo side advanced to the final 4-2 on aggregate following Saturday’s away final leg win in Tunisia.
Vita crawled back from one-down after the hosts had taken a 26th minute lead through an indirect free kick by defender Zuied Derbali.
Vita’s fight-back began on the stroke of halftime when Nelson Munganga headed the ball past goalkeeper Rami Jridi.
Junior sealed the win and aggregate victory in the 55th minute after beating Jridi to see Vita through to their first final appearance since 1981.
The 1973 African champions win means there is a greater prospect of an all-DRC final should archrivals TP Mazembe beat ES Setif of Algeria in their final leg semifinal played late yesterday in Lubumbashi.
Mazembe trail Setif 2-1 from the first leg.
This year’s two-legged final will be played during the weekend of October 25 and the final leg will follow during the weekend of November 1.
