Amaechi Tasks FG On Modern Rail System
Governor Chibuike Amaechi says the Nigerian Rail System need to be modernized to meet current transport challenges in the country.
Though he commended the current effort by the Federal Government to revive the railways, he observed that what the country needs was a faster and more effective rail system that will convey people and goods with little constraints.
In his words, “ We need and advanced technology that will take us from Port Harcourt to Enugu in an hour. When we went to China we covered more than 300,000 kilometers in less than an hour. I was so scared because it runs like the bullet…So let’s hope that the new one they are refurbishing will improve on what we have”.
He commended the efforts of the House of Representative Committee on Land Transport for their effort in ensuring that the ongoing repair works on the railways is concluded in due time, stressing that Nigerians are eager to wait for the outcome.
Speaking earlier, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Land Transport and member representing Degema, Bonny Federal Constituency, Dr. Sokonte Davies informed the governor that they are in the state as part of oversight function to inspect works on the railways.
Going by the pace of work on the rail lines, Davies assured that the trains will get to Port Harcourt by September.
Davies further stated, “ We have seen the work they have done. We appreciate what the Federal Government is doing.”
He also commended the State Government Monorail Project ,which according to him is more modern and effective if completed.
“ I’am sure most of us have not seen Monorail as it’s now physically. Maybe we have seen it on TV, but now we can see it’s real the governor has shown direction,” the lawmaker said.
A member of the Committee from Ebonyi State, Hon Peter Edeh while commending the transformation efforts of the Rivers State Government, stated that Governor Amaechi has set the pace in transforming the rail sector through the Monorail project.
Edeh said, “ I foresee the future where the current railway system we are installing will give way for a more modern type that is why I give kudos to the Rivers State governor for seeing that future and has already started in that direction.”

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
