NAFDAC Raids Medical Centre In PH
Officials of the National
Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) in Rivers State, yesterday raided the premises of Estee Medical Centre, a Port Harcourt-based medical consultancy outfit over allegations of using fake and expired drugs to treat patients.
The Tide investigation reveal that the Port Harcourt office of NAFDAC which carried out the operation, acted on a tip off from an NGO known as RIVPEACE.
The Public Relations Officer of NAFDAC in Port Harcourt, Cyril Monye confirmed the incident and stated that the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Mrs Tania Fasanmi and some staff allegedy involved in the shoddy deal had been arrested.
The NAFDAC spokeman said further investigation was ongoing on the matter.
A staff of NAFDAC who spoke with The Tide on condition of anonymity said there were evidence of re-labelling of expired drug to meet current dates, and disclosed that drugs had been mopped up by the agency.
National Co-ordinator of RIVPEACE, Comrade Success Ekperechi Uju, who commented on the issue, commended NAFDAC for the action, and urged the agency to allow the law to take its full course on the matter.
He assured that the body will remain vigilant over issues affecting the lives of Rivers people.
When contacted on the issue, the chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Dr Ibitrokoemi Kurubo, said the Association was yet to receive any complain from Estee Medical Centre on the matter.
He said the body would carry out its own investigation on the issue, and called on its members to be professional and always subject themselves to scrutiny by all government agencies.
When The Tide visited, the premises of Esteem medical Centre in GRA Phase I, the reporter was denied access by the security staff.
