Statistician Seeks Support for Niger Delta Dev
The Financial Secretary of the Nigeria Statistical Association, Mr. Fidelis Adaka has called on oil companies and other companies operating in the Niger Delta region to collaborate with the government to develop the area.
Adaka who made the call in an interview on Sunday in Asaba, noted the challenges facing the people, and said the development of the region should not be left to the federal and state governments alone.
Adaka stressed the need for the public and private sectors to be involved in the development of the region, especially the remote communities where most of the natural resources are exploited.
He frowned at the concentration of social amenities and industries in cities to the detriment of the rural areas where the large number of the populace reside.
Adaka called for the exploitation of the numerous raw materials in the rural area as a way of developing them and providing jobs for the rural populace. “We should try as much as possible to identify the raw materials closest to every area and tap them.
“We have a lot of untapped raw materials in our various communities and tapping these raw materials and not waiting for the government will attract more development to our areas,’’ he added.
Adaka called for change of attitude on the part of the people to attract investors to the region.
He noted that security of investment is paramount for investment as lack of it could prevent foreign investors from establishing industries in the region.
Adaka expressed the need for the people to be friendly with themselves and strangers to engender peace and security in the region.
“When there is peace and security in the region, investors will be willing to come and invest in our area. “Apart from attracting investors to our region, peaceful and secured environment will also help to reduce the scourge of unemployment in the area.
“Conducive environment will attract more industries and through these industries unemployed youths will be employed,’’ he added.
