NIMASA Lauds Senate Committee On Transport
The Director General of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi has commended the Senate Committee on Marine Transport for the support in approving the 2012 budget and also approving capital projects for the Agency despite the fact that the agency is a regulatory body.
Mr. Akpobolokemi made the commendation while briefing the committee led by its chairman, Senator Hajia Zainab who were on an oversight function to the Agency.
The Director General also appeals to the federal government to initiate a policy that would encourage the growth of indigenous capacity in shipping.
He told the committee that the agency has written the presidency to request for incentives for investors, especially in areas of liberal customs duty on spare parts.
While responding on his plans to established more maritime universities and Academy, Akpobolokemi stated that this would put an end to the training of Nigerian cadet overseas.
He noted that the establishment of maritime institutions was in line with the agency’s is four point agenda.
He said the agency’s activities have so far revolved around the four point agenda that was fashioned out through general consensus by all categories of workers who carried-out an in depth study and critical analysis of the agency’s enabling instrument, as well as informed review of issues and factors that altogether underpin the development of Nigeria maritime potentials.
He explained that the agency has also extended its anti piracy operations to Benin Republic based on the request of the president of Benin Republic to the Nigeria government.
“The agency was directed by president to extend our anti-piracy operation to Benin water”, he added.
“The operation tagged “operation posterity” commenced last year and its been sustained till date on further directive. Needless to state that this operation has assisted greatly in curbing the menace of piracy and armed robbery at sea and other related vices within Benin Republic waters and its neighbouring states of Nigeria, Togo and by extension Ghana.
