FAAN Bans Correspondents From Protocol Lodge
The Tide Aviation correspondent and others covering Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, in Rivers State, have been banned from entering the protocol lodge of the airport to interview dignitaries who use the place while waiting for their flights.
The General Manager, Public Affairs, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Akin Olukunle in a telephone interview with The Tide said the ban was necessitated by the directive from the former National Security Adviser, Major-General Andrew Owoeye Azazi (rtd).
He attributed the development to the security situation in the country, claiming that the Aviation correspondents covering Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, were also banned from entering the Presidential Lodge at the airport.
But an aviation correspondent from one of the local tabloids in Rivers State (name withheld), who visited Murtala Mohammed International Airport a fortnight ago, said the authorities of Port Harcourt International Airport were economical with the truth as aviation correspondents in Lagos were seen at the Presidential Lodge doing their job. He explained that FAAN security had taken a step further by preventing the aviation correspondents from entering the terminal building to seek information that would be beneficial to the public, and alleged that the authorities of Port Harcourt International Airport orchestrated the ban to cover any wrong doing by their staff.
Security chiefs at the airport, who spoke with The Tide on condition of anonymity, said they were not aware of such directive by the former National Security Adviser, stressing that aviation correspondents covering PNIA had been working within the ambit of the law.
According to them, journalists play complementary role with security agents in ensuring the security of lives and property in any given society.
They assured that the matter would be discussed with the authorities of Port Harcourt International Airport so as to facilitate unhindered access by aviation correspondents to sources of information at the airport.
Also, the Regional Manager, South-South/South-East of FAAN, Henry Anyanwu in an interview told The Tide that he would meet other stakeholders to come up with a workable arrangement that would enable the aviation correspondents carry out their duties at the airport in the interest of the generality of the people of the state in particular and Nigeria at large.
It would be recalled that since last July when the ban took effect, aviation correspondents have been finding it extremely difficult not only to access relevant information but also to operate fairly conveniently, even as the reconstruction work on the airport terminal building has displaced most workers from their offices.
