Senator Seeks Improved Funding For N’ Delta Projects
The Senate Committee on Niger Delta last Wednesday in Abuja stressed the need for more funds to execute on going development projects in the region.
The Chairman of the committee, Sen. James Manager, made the remarks when members visited the Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Mr Kingsley Kuku.
Manager said that the projects in the Niger Delta should be well funded so as to sustain the existing peace in the region.
He said that when the committee toured round the region, it observed that most of the development projects were under funded.
The chairman recalled that the militancy happened due to underdevelopment in the region, saying that under funding of projects would not augur well for continued peace in the area.
Manager urged the Federal Government to extend the amnesty programme to cover other youths who surrendered their arms to the Joint Task Force in 2009 after the expiration of the deadline.
He commended the management of the amnesty programme for disarming, rehabilitating and reintegrating 26, 358 former militants.
Responding, Kuku, who is also the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, said the amnesty programme would require three skills acquisition training centres in the region.
According to him, the Federal Government still needs to tackle challenges of infrastructure and environmental degradation in the area.
He said infrastructure and other social amenities such as schools and health care centres should be provided in the various communities.
