Emergency Rule: Plateau Councils Get Withheld Fund
The Federal Government
has released
the withheld funds of four local government councils under emergency
rule in Plateau.
The Attorney General and Commissioner of
Justice, Mr. Edward Pwajok, said on Thursday at a ministerial
briefing in Jos that a letter conveying the release of the funds was
received by the government on Wednesday.
The local government areas affected
are Riyom, Jos North, Barkin Ladi and Jos South.
“The letter indicated that all the
funds have been released to them. We were so relieved and happy when we
read the letter, which reached us on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, “ he said.
The Tide reports that the four local
councils and 11 others in Yobe, Niger and Borno have not received
their monthly allocation from the federation account since December 2011 when
President Goodluck Jonathan declared emergency rule in the areas.
Pwajok described the release of the funds
as “a huge relief” to the government and the affected council workers, whom he
said had not been paid salaries for five months.
On the ban on commercial motorcycles in
the state, the commissioner lamented the uncooperative attitude of the
security operatives.
“We have imposed this ban on
commercial motorcycle operations in the state but the police and the soldiers
maintaining the peace in the state have refused to enforce it.
“It is clear that our governor is not in
control of either the Police or the STF. We are indeed worried over this
situation because we are looking at the security implications,“ he said.
He said the ministry had disposed of 75 out
of 730 civil cases it was handling, leaving 655 of the
cases pending.
The commissioner attributed the poor
performance to shortage of lawyers.
“We have only 30 state counsels for all the
cases, and because of the shortage, I sometimes have to enter the courts to
handle some of the cases, “ he said.
Pwajok said that the government would
engage more lawyers to help in handling the numerous cases of
suspects awaiting trial.
