60 Global Publishers Grace Book Fair

The Executive Secretary of Nigerian Book
Fair Trust, Mr Abiodun Omotubi, said 130 publishers were participating in this
year’s 11th Nigeria International Book Fair.

Omotubi, who made the disclosure in an
interview Monday, said that the fair was holding at the multi-purpose hall of
the University of Lagos.

He added that out of the figure, 60
international publishers from the UK, U.S., Turkey, India, UAE, Zimbabwe and
Ghana were participating in the five-day event.

The executive secretary said that the theme
of this year’s fair is: “The State of Infrastructural Development in Africa and
the Future of the Book Trade“.

Omotubi described the level of attendance
as a ‘boom‘, adding that the organisers had intensified efforts in ensuring its
success, especially in the areas of awareness and other logistics.

“I must say that I am overwhelmed by the
response from the exhibitors at this year’s fair. We have been looking forward
to a day such as this and I must confess that it is the first time we would
record such massive attendance since inception.

“Last year, we had some hitches, especially
in the area of power supply, and this did not go down too well with the
exhibitors.

“Today, I am proud to say that there are no
space left for extra exhibitors as all the stands meant for that purpose have
been taken up,” he said.

Director, Urantia Book Fellowship, U.S., Mr
Buck Weimer, expressed satisfaction at the level of preparation for the fair.

Weimer said that the fair would promote
business and create a platform for good networking, adding, “I must say I love
what I am seeing around me, the people are nice, very welcoming and ready to
assist.“

Executive Business Director (Africa), Repro
Indian Limited, Miss Ankita Upadhyay, said that this year’s event might record
better successes than previous years.

“I have been attending this fair in the
past 10 years and I must say that the organisers are improving with every
edition and I pray that they do not relent,“ she said.

Marketing Controller (Lagos), MacMillan
Nigeria Publishers, Mr Kayode Adewoyin, commended the organisers for ensuring
that all the necessary logistics for the success of the fair were put in place.

The fair,
an annual event which holds in May is a gateway to access the biggest
book market in Africa and also create a platform for interface among
stakeholders in the book industry within and outside the country.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

According to the Head of Service, Governor Fubara has continued to demonstrate uncommon commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Rivers State, stressing that such gestures underscore his people-oriented leadership style. She urged civil servants across the state to remain supportive of the governor’s administration in order to sustain good governance and effective public service delivery.

Speaking on behalf of the Body of Permanent Secretaries, Dr. Brown congratulated Governor Fubara on the occasion of his 51st birthday, describing him as “a Governor who leads by serving.”

She further praised the governor’s service-driven and people-centred leadership approach, noting that it has significantly contributed to institutional stability and improved efficiency within the state’s public service. Special appreciation was expressed for the approval of a befitting accommodation complex for Permanent Secretaries, which she said reflects the governor’s commitment to staff welfare and enhanced productivity.

As part of activities to mark the governor’s birthday, the Body of Permanent Secretaries announced the sponsorship of 329 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms for indigent students across the state.

A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.
