RSG Evicts Illegal Occupants Of Low-Cost Houses
The Rivers State Government, has commenced the eviction of illegal occupiers of the abandoned low-cost houses in the state.
Already, the exercise has started with Oroije, Oromeneke and Iriebe housing estates.
The State Commissioner for Housing, Mr Marshal Uwom, who made this known in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said the illegal occupiers would be challenged with the full force of the law.
Uwom noted that at the end of the exercise, the houses would be sold to the state civil servants at a cost not exceeding N4 million, pointing out that everything possible was being done to ensure that all those who were earlier allocated the houses could access them on owner-occupier basis.
He debunked rumours making the rounds that the Iriebe low-cost houses had been sold out by the government, explaining that some criminal and fraudulent elements in the society tried to convert government properties to their private use.
According to him, through the police in the state, those elements had been handled and sanity and security now provided there, adding that discussions are on-going with union trustees to see how to sell the houses by mortgage content that would be within the reach of low cadre workers.
On the National Housing Fund (NHF) being managed by the State Housing and Property Development Authority, the commissioner said the government is ensuring that the contributions being deducted from workers’ salaries and applied for the development of low-income houses was transparent.
Commending the state workforce and labour unions for their dedication, maturity and uprightness in addressing issues of national and state relevance, Uwom assured that Governor Chibuike Amaechi has provided conducive environment for the state workforce, and urged them to sustain the tempo.
