MWUN Issues Firm Ultimatum Over Workers’ Sack
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Eastern Zone, has expressed worry over the alleged indiscriminate sacking of workers by the Ports and Terminal Operators Limited (PTOL), in Port Harcourt Ports, Rivers State.
To this end, a one month ultimatum has been given to the management of the company to settle all issues arising from this development or face a show down.
The zonal Vice President of the union, Comrade Waite Harry who dropped the hint in a chat with The Tide in Port Harcourt recently said several letters had been sent in this regard for a peaceful dialogue, but all to no avail.
Comrade Harry said the union had explored all necessary avenues as provided by the law, adding that at expiration of the ultimatum, there would be no option than to take necessary steps against the management of PTOL.
“We are not against any employer but let them do what is required of them in the condition of service”, he noted, stressing that the management of PTOL should ensure that workers sacked should be paid all benefits and entitlements promptly to avoid any hardship and suffering of the affected workers.
The Union boss disclosed that court cases instituted against the management by the alleged sacked workers had already been withdrawn to allow room for dialogue, but that the management seemed not to be interested.
He however enjoined the sacked workers to remain calm until the expiration of the ultimate and wait for further directive.
Meanwhile, efforts to confirm report from the General Manager, PTOL, Port Harcourt Ports, Alhaji A. A. Abdullahi proved abortive.
