Commission To Fast-Track Retirement Benefits Under Way
A committee that would workout prompt payment of retirement benefits to retiring civil servants would soon be constituted. Chairman, Civil Service Commission, Chief Ngo Martyns Yellowe disclosed this at a meeting with Directors, Deputy and Assistant Directors as well as Heads of Departments of Rivers State Ministry of Environment, Port Harcourt.
Chief Yellowe said that the meeting was a fact finding one, that would enable the Commission acquaint itself with the problems of civil servants and perhaps, proffer solutions.
The Chairman who said he was disappointed with some of the practices that existed in the civil service said his commission would use information gathered during such meetings to produce a sustainable blue print for the state civil service that would promote joy among staff.
He expressed concern over the non payment of promotion arrears, delayed promotions, and payment of retirement benefits; saying that the system must change.
The Chairman expressed displeasure over the attitude of some civil servants who frustrate the promotion of some staff, describing such behaviour as “wickedness”.
He also cautioned against the practice of falsified age, and habitual late coming among civil servants, calling on the Ministry to declare vacancies that exist in the offices for possible employment opportunity.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. George C. Nwaeke had commended the administrative vision of the chairman describing it as “unique” as he was the first to visit ministries personally to ascertain their problems.
He expressed optimism that his approach to management would boost the career of staffs.
According to him, every organization hires skills, adducing that what hinders effective utility of skill is the inability of managers to ginger professionalism.
