S’African Airways Plans Expansion
South African Airways (SAA), has concluded plans to enhance flight schedule, which will open new travel options to its valued customers.
The roll out of the airline’s network expansion plan will result in an increase in seats available on some routes and an increase in the frequency of its flights on other routes. “Effective May 1, 2011, we will offer our customers the convenience of flying non-stop between Johannesburg and New York. Our non-stop flights to New York will allow a full day in Johannesburg with an early morning arrival in New York.
“Further, the reduced travel time result in fast and efficient connections to several key U.S. destinations such as Boston, Chicago, Florida, California, as well as, Canada and the Caribbean,” says Theunis Potgieter, SAA’s general manager, Commercial.
The non-stop flight from Johannesburg to New York (SA203) will depart OR Tambo International Airport daily at 20h35 (SA local time) arriving John F. Kennedy International Airport at 06h40 (New York local time), whilst the non-stop flights from New York (SA204) will depart daily at 11h15 arriving in OR Tambo International Airport at 08h40.
SAA currently is finalising all outstanding operational details for the northbound non-stop flight on the Johannesburg to New York route.
“SAA now offers the fastest and most comfortable way to commute between Southern Africa and this major global hub. Travellers originating from other domestic points and Southern African countries like Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Angola, and Zambia and as far north as Kenya and Tanzania, can now be in New York with a single, quick connection via Johannesburg,” says Potgieter.
This new service will further strengthen Johannesburg’s position as the major aviation hub in Sub Saharan Africa. SAA will utilise the Airbus 340-600 on this ultra long haul operation.”
Due to increased demand for services in Africa, SAA will introduce wide body Airbus 340 operations to Kenya and Namibia. Effective February 27 2011, SAA will operate a wide body aircraft between Johannesburg and Nairobi.
SAA will operate a daily frequency to Nairobi with an increase in seats from 2 918 to 3 500 per week. Effective 27 March 2011 SAA will also introduce wide body services between Johannesburg and Windhoek, Namibia on 7 of its 20 weekly services, increasing the number of the airline’s seats available on this route from 5830 to 6 746.
These services are perfectly timed for connections to and from Frankfurt, Munich, London and New York via Johannesburg.

SMEs Dev: Firms Launch N100m Loan Scheme
The facility will be disbursed through participating Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), which will in turn extend the loans to their customers, particularly SMEs, as they directly interface with businesses at the grassroots level.
The Executive Director of COMCIN, Mr. Micheal Ogbaa who represented the Chairman, Dr. Iredele Oyedele (FCA, FCCA), said the initiative is designed to strengthen micro-lending institutions and expand access to finance for grassroots entrepreneurs, particularly women and youths in the informal sector.
Ogbaa explained that COMCIN does not lend directly to individuals but works through its network of microfinance and cooperative institutions, which in turn provide loans to end users.
“We came together to advocate for the microfinance ecosystem. Commercial banks often exclude people at the grassroots, but our members are positioned to reach them. This facility will empower them to do more,” he said.
He noted that the loan scheme offers low interest rates and flexible repayment plans, making it more accessible to small business owners.
According to him, about 90 percent of beneficiaries are expected to be women, who play a key role in sustaining families and driving economic activities at the local level.
“Our focus is on traders, service providers, and players in the informal sector. These are the real movers of the economy. By supporting them, we are strengthening families and contributing to national development,” he added.
Ogbaa disclosed that eligible SMEs with proven integrity and business track records could access up to N5 million each through participating micro-lending institutions. The rollout has commenced in Lagos and will extend to Abuja, Enugu, and other regions, including the South-West, South-East, and North-East.
He said 12 micro-lending institutions have already benefited from the scheme, while 85 applications are currently being processed under the pilot phase.
“Our target is to reach at least 100,000 SMEs nationwide. We are building a platform that connects funding partners with credible micro-lending institutions, creating a reliable channel for financial inclusion,” Ogbaa said.
He added that COMCIN is also working to attract larger funding pools from development finance institutions and private investors, noting that successful implementation of the pilot phase would boost confidence and unlock more capital for SMEs.
“We have seen encouraging testimonies from early beneficiaries. As we demonstrate transparency and efficiency, more institutions will be willing to channel funds through us,” he said.
