Ateke States Commitment To Local Sports Activities
One of the leaders of the Niger Delta Struggle, Chief Ateke Tom has said that grassroots sports will soon experience a phenomenal growth in Rivers State following plans to float many sports competitions.
Comrade Ateke Tom stated this during the award presentation ceremony of the just concluded Wakirike Peace Sports cum cultural Fiesta held in Okrika yesterday.
According to the Okrika born activities, who is the sponsor of the fiesta, the fiesta was designed to promote grassroots football in the area and also to prove to all that lasting peace has finally returned to Okrika and Rivers State.
He continued that the Wakirike Peace Sports fiesta which featured events such as Football, wrestling, Egwu masquerade and draught will soon have its female version. He added that he is commitment towards the project is hinged on his love for the round leather game.
In the presentation ceremony, the Ogoni United FC which emerged champions was presented with a trophy and a cash prize of five hundred thousand naira,.
Kala United and Jephta FCs finished second and third were given a cash prize of three hundred thousand and two hundred thousand naira, respectively.
In individual awards, Yaro Yaro of Kala F.C emerged the most valuable player, Achese Oba of Kala, the highest goal scorer while the best goal keeper award was won by Emmanuel Otobong, also of Kala FC.
They were each rewarded with a cash prize of one hundred thousand naira.
