C’River Gets Doctors’ Strike Notice
The National Association of Government Employed Doctors, Cross River Branch, on Sunday issued a notice for the commencement of a strike action on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by Dr Benedict Ajogbor, the state chairman of the association, in Calabar, the doctors said the action followed failure by the state government to improve their working conditions.
According to the statement, in spite of the series of letters on the plight of doctors working for the state, the government failed to respond to the request.
It stated that the government failed to respond to their demand for employment of more doctors and full implementation of the CONMESS for all Medical/ Dental practitioners in its employment.
It listed the grievances to include exodus of medical doctors to other states due to poor pay package, huge pay disparity between state doctors and those in the teaching hospitals, and lack of training opportunities for medical workers in the state.
According to the statement, of the 90 doctors in the employ of the state in 2006, only 37 are currently in service as the poor working conditions have compelled some doctors to leave.
It stated that the situation had also led to increased stress for the few doctors still in the service, adding that directors in the ministry had to attend to patients.
The statement further said that all efforts to engage the state government in dialogue with the doctors on the issue at stake were unsuccessful.
It urged the public not to see their action as selfish, adding that their resolve to salvage the situation informed the strike notice.
