Igwuruta/Chokocho Road Dualisation Ready, Soon
The Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Hon. Dakuku Peterside has expressed optimism that government would deliver the first phase of the Igwuruta/Chokocho dualised road before the rains.
The commissioner, who made the disclosure during a rountine project inspection to the site, commended the contractor handling the project for the remarkable improvement, saying: “the last time we came here there was a deep gully throughout the entire stretch of the road, there is totally a remarkable improvement. The contractor working here must be commended, the people of Etche can at least drive home even before we get to the asphalt stage.”
Hon. Peterside who expressed satisfaction with both the quality and pace of work however regretted that the progress of work suffered a hitch when expatriate workers were last week kidnapped at the site.
He therefore, called on the contractor to re-double his effort to achieve early completion of the prohect and commended the Rivers State Police Command and the state government for their prompt intervention in securing the early release of the kidnapped expatriate workers.
On the issue of compensation, Peterside noted that government had paid compensations and had also served property owners the mandatory fourteen days notice to remove their structures from the right of way, saying that demolition would commence immediately at the expiration of the mandatory period given to enable the contractor relocate facilities on the road alignment.
He also noted that adequate drainage would be provided to check flooding problems in the area.
Among the project inspected was the UTC, Azkiwe, Lagos Bus Stop Daulisation project.
It would be recalled that the commissioner had earlier called on all road contractors in the state to redouble their efforts in view of the early rains, assuring them of government’s continued resolved to meet their contractual obligation to them. He therefore, stated that government expected dedication to early completion of projects from them.
He also appealed to the citizens of Rivers State to cooperate with the government as they grapple with the inconveniences associated with rebuilding a city.
