Creation Of States Not Feasible – Senator Ake
The senator representing Rivers West Senatorial zone in the National Assembly, Senator Willson Ake has said that the creation of more states for now in the country is not feasible in view of the rigid constitutional requirements for the exercise. Senator Ake who said this in an interview with newsmen at Odiereke during the 60th birthday celebration of HRM Dr. (Mrs) Felicia Funmilayo Robinson said that the National Assembly is handicapped following the rigid requirements for the creation of new states in the country.
On the demand for the creation of four new states out of the present Rivers State, the Senator said that it is the right of every one to demand for a new state, but noted that the issue before the agitators is whether Rivers State is qualified for four new states.
“The issue is that are they qualified to have four new states? The constitution is very clear on who is qualified to have a state” he said.
Senator Ake also described the call for the resignation of President Yar’Adua as misplaced, stressing that the present condition of the president has not warranted his resignation.
He however said that, the National Assembly will apply the provision of the constitution if the president is incapable of carrying out official functions.
The Senator described the celebrant, HRM Dr. (Mrs) Felicia Funmilayo Robinson as an inspiration to the womenfolk in Ekpeye Kingdom and the entire Rivers State.
