Minister Makes Case For Physically Challenged
Policy makers at all level of governance have been urged to consider the interest of physically challenged people in the society while taking decisions.
The Minister of Women Affairs Hajia Salamatu Hussein Suleiman who made the call recently urged state governors to initiates disability friendly policies with a view to curb high rate of street begging in the country.
The Minister who made the appeal during the 2009 celebration of International Day for persons with disability held in Yenagoa, said though the Federal government has initiated programmes that would discourage disabled persons from begging, a visit to most cities in the country and Bayelsa in particular shows that the malaise still persist.
The minister who was represented at the occasion by Mrs Endurance Egbe said the action taken by Federal government is similar to that of Bayelsa State government pointing out that the United Nations convention on the right of disable persons have been domesticated.
To this end, she said opportunities have been provided for physically challenged to actualise their different potentials without resorting to begging.
