Harry Heads Commonwealth Association

Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Tonye Harry has been elected as the president of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) African region.

He was elected during the on-going 40th annual general meeting of the association at the Rivers State House of Assembly auditorium, venue of the CPA conference.

Also elected are Rt Hon Jackson R, Mthembu, Vice President (South Africa), Hon Nminwa as chairman, South Africa, Hon Bethel Amadi (Nigeria) as well as Hon Montaga (Zambia) as the treasurer.

By this election, Rt Hon Tonye Harry becomes the first president of CPA Africa region to be elected from a national branch of the association.

Rt Hon Harry was nominated by the leader of Kenya delegation to the conference and was supported by the Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Bello Adejare.

In his post election speech, the new CPA president thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and assured that the new executives of the association would uphold the tenets of the body.

Hon Harry stated that by his election as the president of CPA, he has been elevated to serve the country and the entire African Commonwealth region, adding that he would ever remain grateful to the association and the governor of the state, Rt Hon Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.

“We were not fortunate enough because the CPA constitution did not give us the room to understudy the ex-president of the association, he said.

The CPA president thanked the out gone president for his contributions which, he said has impacted positively on the growth of the association, and urged members to close ranks with the new leadership so that the dreams of the organisation can be realised.
