Impeachment Threat: NCSU Set To Mobilise Workers, CSOs

Published

on

Following the recent threat by the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara over alleged constitutional breaches, the Nigeria Civil Service Union(NCSU) has called on civil servants in the State, Civil Society Organisations, labour unions and well-meaning Rivers people and Nigerians to get ready for action, to stop the lawmakers from truncating and destroying democracy in the State.
The Rivers State Chairman of NCSU, Comrade Chukwuka Richman Osumah, who made the call while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, said the union members would no longer fold their arms and watch those he described as defected lawmakers to hold the State to ransom.
He said the threat by the lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Governor is a joke taken too far, and urged workers, members of Civil Society Organisations and other Rivers people to be ready to troop out to the streets, whenever they are called upon, to defend and protect democracy in the State.
According to him, it is high time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called to order the 27 lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and prevail on them to embrace peace, in order to safeguard, preserve and maintain the relative peace existing in the State.
Osumah, however, opined that the impeachment threat against Governor Fubara is dead on arrival, as it would not see the light of the day, since the people of the State are solidly behind the Governor, and urged the lawmakers to tread with utmost caution, in order not to throw the State into lawlessness and pandemonium.
The labour leader further indicated that he is really shocked over the studied silence being maintained by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum( NGF) over what is playing out in Rivers State, and urged the Governors to step out from the fence and defend their colleague, in the face of the lingering political crisis in the State.
Osumah equally enjoined Governor Fubara not to be perturbed and distracted by the impeachment threat against him, as well as the shameless antics of the lawmakers, who are hellbent on throwing the State into political turmoil.
He said what Rivers people need today more than anything else are peace, good governance and sustainable development, with their welfare and wellbeing being given top priority, as being championed, demonstrated and envisioned by the Governor Fubara administration.

Group Faults Shell In Ogale, Bille Environmental Pollution

Published

on

Fridays for Future Nigeria (FFFN), an environmental protection group, has faulted the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) for the environmental pollution in Ogale and Bille communities in Rivers State.
This is contained in a statement by the National Coordinator and Country Representative, FFFN, Mr. Kingsley Odogwu.
Odogwu, who in strong terms condemned Shell’s disregard for human and environmental rights in the region, said, ”The people of the Niger Delta, including Ogale and Bille communities, have an inherent right to a clean and healthy environment, a right that Shell has systematically violated”, he said.
The Ogale and Bille communities in oil rich Nigeria’s Niger Delta are experiencing ongoing and significant environmental pollution, primarily from oil spills.
Residents have claimed severe contamination of their water supply, farmlands, and waterways, preventing them from fishing and farming due to the chronic oil pollution.
This issue is currently the subject of ongoing legal action against Shell in the UK courts by members of these communities.
The FFFN National Coordinator urged the Nigerian government and the international community to support the Ogale and Bille communities in their quest for justice and to hold Shell accountable for its environmental destruction.
He lamented the decades of environmental degradation due to oil spills, gas flaring, and other harmful practices by Shell and other oil companies in the region.
According to him, the ecosystem of the affected communities has been severely damaged, and the health and livelihoods of its inhabitants compromised.
”The affected communities demand that Shell fulfill its legal obligations by cleaning up the pollution to international standards and providing adequate compensation.
”The FFFN stands in solidarity with the Ogale and Bille communities in their pursuit of justice against Shell Petroleum for its egregious environmental destruction in the Niger Delta”, he said.
He called on all citizens of the country to support the move for the actualisation of justice for all the communities and other victims of ecosystem pollution in Nigeria.
