RSG Engages 475 Youth In Waste Management

The Rivers State Government has engaged over 475 youth from various parts of the state in waste management activities.
The scheme is the first phase of the public works sub-component of the State Employment And Expenditure For Result (SEEFOR) project jointly financed by the State Government, the World Bank and the European Union (EU).
The State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Barrister Isaac Kamalu, who declared open an Orientation Programme for the 475 youth last weekend in Port Harcourt, said that, the second phase of the programme, which comes up later this year, will lead to the engagement of over 4,000 youth in waste management activities in 21 local government areas outside Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor.
The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Felix Odungweru, also said that, the life span of the SEEFOR project has been extended from 2017 to 2019.
He said that, the programme was designed to keep the youth away from social vices, and commended the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, for providing the opportunity for Rivers youth to be meaningfully engaged.
Also speaking, the State Coordinator of the SEEFOR Project, Mr. Kelcious Amos, said that, the SEEFOR project, which has been on in the state for sometime now, has been carried out with various intervention programmes to improve the lives of youth as well as develop rural communities in the state.
Amos said that under public works component, more youth will be engaged in employment activites while farmers are being supported through the Technical, Vocational and Agricltural Training (TVAT) component of the project.
According to him, under the TVAT component, technical schools were being rehabilitated across the state while teachers are also being trained.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the opportunity to improve themselves by keeping a way from crimes.
A cross section of participants, who spoke to newsmen at the programme, commended the state government for considering them for the opportunity, and pledge to make the best of it.
