Dickson Tasks Office Holders On Service Delivery
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has called on people occupying positions of public trust in the country to endeavour to do what is right, fair and good in exercising the authority at their disposal.
The Governor, who made the call at an inter-denominational thanksgiving service marking the commencement of the 2015/2016 Legal Year of the state judiciary in Yenagoa last Monday, urged judicial officers to be above-board in the dispensation of justice in the country.
Reaffirming his guiding slogan, “He Serveth God Well, Who Serveth Men Well”, the governor noted that lawyers and judges occupy an important position in society that requires them to practise their profession with a view to promoting the common good.
While congratulating the State Chief Judge, Juctice Kate Abiri, President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Daniel Ayah, judges and members of the bar in the state on the celebration of a successful legal year, the Governor, who read the first lesson at the service, expressed appreciation to the state judiciary for their contributions to the development of the state.
He, however, used the opportunity to call on all people of goodwill to pray for the peace and stability of the state, especially as it is going through another political season.
According to the governor, “There is no doubt that in all that you do in your courts, small as well as big, high or low, and as the preacher said, all of us who may not be judges but who are persons in authority, should remind ourselves to do always what is right, fair and good.
“You may be misunderstood, particularly as we the political leaders are. People will say all kinds of things and impute motives even to the purest action. But in all of this, whether it is about judgments that you execute in your courts, people may understand or misunderstand. But never
mind. Once you are at peace with your conscience about doing what is right, fair and good, I believe that God our Creator, by whose leave and permission and grace we even exist will be happy with us.
In his sermon, the International Director of Greater Evangelism World Crusade, Pastor Isaac Glori, enjoined judges to make impartiality and the fear of God their watchwords in the performance of their professional duties.
Quoting copiously from the scriptures, Pastor Ilori stressed the need for legal practitioners to continually seek divine wisdom in order to deliver what he describes as just justice to positively impact on the society that sees it as the hop of the common man.
The State Chief Judge Justice, Kate Abiri read the second lesson drawn from Luke Chapter 18:1-8 at the service, which featured special prayers for the continued stability of the judiciary, the federal and the state governments.
