Communities Protest Alleged Plan To Dissolve DESOPADEC
Members of some host communities (HOSTCOM) in the oil and gas producing areas of Delta have staged a protest against what they perceived as a ploy to dissolve the Delta Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC).
The protesters, under the aegis of HOSTCOM, besieged the State House of Assembly in Asaba as early as 8.30a.m., carrying placards with various inscriptions such as “No scrapping of DESOPADEC”.
Others read “HOSTCOM says no to DESOPADEC Amendment Bill before the House’’.”There is beauty and strength in diversification of culture’’.
The spokesman of the group, Chief Peter Ogendegbe, told journalists that Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta had sent an amendment bill to the state assembly with the intension to scrap the commission.
He also said that each of the commissioners representing the five ethnic nationalities in the DESOPADEC commission had objected to the proposed bill.
Ogendegbe, therefore, urged the state House of Assembly to ensure that the bill does not scale through, adding that the objective of the commission was to ensure adequate development of the oil producing communities.
Addressing the protesters, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr Peter Onwusanya, assured the people that the legislature would not betray the confidence reposed in it.
Onwusanya said that the DESOPADEC Amendment Bill before the assembly would take the normal course of public hearing to obtain the views of the people, especially the host communities.
He urged them to maintain peace and harmony during the process of the consideration of the bill.
According to reports, DESOPADEC was established in 2006 with the objective of developing the oil producing communities in the state.
The board of the commission has representatives of the five ethnic nationalities comprising Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko and Ndokwa.
