Commuters Want Further Reduce In Fuel Pump Price
Commuters in Enugu have called on the Federal Government to further reduce the pump price of petrol to enable commercial drivers to reduce the cost of transportation.
The Tide source correspondent who monitored the effect of the recent reduction of N10 from the pump price on transport fares observed that most of the commercial drivers were yet to reduce their fares.
They claimed that the reduction was too insignificant for them to effect a tangible change in the fares charged, thereby causing frequent disagreement between them and commuters.
Some commuters who spoke with reporters were of the opinion that the amount did not change anything, especially on the cost of transportation.
A student of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, Miss Joy Okolie, said that when the reduction was announced by the Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke, everyone was happy, hoping that the transportation fare would reduce.
A fruits seller, Mrs Rita Onyebuchi, said that if transport fare had reduced, the price of fruits would also have reduced.
“I want the Federal Government that announced this reduction to ensure that filling stations sell at the official rate to benefit Nigerians whom the prouncement was meant for,’’ she said.
A passenger at one of the fleet operators’ park, Mr Solomon Ikechi, said that the fare from Enugu to Onitsha had remained at N520 in spite of the reduction in the fuel price.
“I was hoping to meet the fare at not more than N450 but up till now there is no change in the transport fare,” he said.
A bus conductor, Mr Obi Okafor, said the fare could not be reduced as many of the filling stations were still selling petrol at N100, claiming that it was their old stock.
A tricycle rider, Mr Chigozie Ugwu, told reporters that the transport fare could not be reduced now until petrol stations reduced their pump price from N100 to N87.
“I went today to buy fuel at one of the fuel stations on the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway at N97and when I asked why they were still selling at the old price, they said they still had old stock,” he said.
